In this era of increasing breast cancer incidence ,a joint effort was taken up by AFPI Kerala chapter and Jwala to conduct a breast cancer awareness campaign. It was held at Vattamkulam, a rural village in Malappuram. The camp was organised by Dr. Ameena O K, Family Physician, FHC Vattamkulam. Panchayath president Smt.Sreeja Parakkal inaugurated the event. Seminar was conducted by Dr.Resmi.S.Kaimal, President ,AFPI Kerala.
Around 110 people attended the awareness class. Orator ,Dr. Resmi took the crowd through risk factors, screening, early detection and treatment. She stressed upon the fact that vigilance and caution, rather than fear, are needed to detect and treat the disease at an early stage itself. Crowd was very receptive with their doubts and clarifications.
Heartfelt thanks to AFPI Kerala, Jwala, Vattamkulam panchayath, Staff of FHC Vattamkulam and Kudumbasree members for making this event a success

As part of the Wonca Emergency Medicine Special Interest Group International Educational & Cultural Exchange Series,
the inaugural session was held at Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, Thrissur on 28th August 2019.
The chief guest and invited speaker for the event was Dr Elena Klusova from Spain. The 'Twilight Talk' topic was "Helicopter rescue and Out of Hospital Emergency Medicine".
Dr. Elena is a Family Physician with subspecialisation in Emergency Medicine and works in the island of Ibizza, Spain. She is also the Vasco Da Gama Europe co-ordinator
and health exchange co-ordinator for Spain.
She is Wonca world Emergency Medicine SIG executive and is also active with Wonca working party on family violence.
The interesting session by Dr. Elena was followed by a panel discussion. The panelists included Dr. Resmi S. Kaimal,
Kerala state president of AFPI, fellows from the Academic College of Emergency Experts
Dr. Binoy Xavier and Dr. Rahul Balasubramanian, Dr. Elena and Dr. Sara Benny, Senior Resident in Emergency Medicine from MOSC Medical College, Kolenchery.
Dr. Nisanth Menon, organizer of the event was also the moderator for the session covering topics like emergencies in primary care, Expectation and Reality of emergency medicine, health exchange programmes, mentor-mentee programmes, life cycle challenges of doctors, prehospital and urgent care etc.

The event was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Shibu Puthenpurackal, Associate Director of Amala Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) followed by felicitation of
Dr. Elena Klusova by Rev. Fr. Thomas Vazhakkala, Associate Director of AIMS. Prof. Dr. Betsy Thomas, Principal of AIMS felicitated the gathering
whereas Dr. Nisanth Menon proposed the Vote of Thanks.
Prof. Padmaja, Vice Principal of AIMS gave away the momento to panelists whereas Dr. Elena handed over the "best question award" to Thomas, a medical student chosen for the best question asked during the panel discussion.
AFPI Kerla State Secretary Dr. Serin Kuriakose and Dr. Kailas P were among the many senior faculty who attended the inspirational session alongside a host of junior doctors and undergraduates. The session ended with ample dose of inspiration to the medical students aligning them to primary care and emergency medicine.

Talk on Life style diseases at NSS Taluk Union hall Thodupuzha on 15/6/19. Talked about diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, stroke, myocardial infarction, obesity, stress, joint problems due to unhealthy life style. Slide presentation done on cause,how to diagnose,complications if not treated and finally on prevention. Talk attended NSS members and health care volunteers


A Medical Camp and House Visits organized by PROJECT SETU

A free medical camp and house visits was organized by PROJECT SETU in association with Academy of Family Physicians of India and AFPI Kerala Chapter in Koothattukulam, Ernakulam district, Kerala.
Dr. Resmi S. Kaimal, Dr. Shobha Prabhakar, Dr. Indu Rajeev and Dr. Sangeetha S. volunteered to be part of the medical camp offering their full support to Dr. Roshni Jhan Ganguly (Project Founder and Director) to execute the project.
Amanakara Sri Bharatha Swami Kshethram Devaswam Trust committee supported us by making all necessary arrangements and providing support staff.
The General health screening was attended by 100 people. All adults were screened for Hypertension and Diabetes and follow up was done for the same. Other general problems like Anemia, COPD, CAD, hemorrhoids etc. were also addressed. Complaints regarding vision and other ophthalmic complaints were referred to nearby hospital. Patients with altered findings and poor adherence to the old treatment were referred to higher centres for further need. Dr.Sangeetha who practices in Chazhikkatt hospital , Thodupuzha and also took part in the camp would take care of the follow ups . In this way we also created a Family Physicians network maintained the continuity of care.
Dr. Shobha Prabhakar and Dr. Roshni Jhan Ganguly also did home visits to understand the socioeconomic conditions and its impact on the biopsychosocial diagnosis. This truly gave an insight of their living conditions and its effect on their health problems and quality of life. We collected all the data in a comprehensive assessment sheet which would be used for future research purposes. We realized that awareness , adequate finances and timely intervention were the key to good health.
It was overall a very satisfactory camp with an overwhelming response. This is just the beginning and we will be continuing this activity on a regular basis in the same place and across India.
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS SEMINAR
5TH JANUARY 2019
Academy of Family Physicians of India (AFPI) Kerala chapter, in association with JWALA conducted a seminar on breast cancer awareness at Kalloorkkad, Muvattupuzha on 5th January 2019.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr Amarlal, Medical Officer, Kalloorkkad Health Centre. AFPI Kerala chapter state president Dr. Resmi S. Kaimal and secretary Dr. Serin Kuriakose conducted awareness classes on breast cancer including risk factors, screening, early detection and treatment. The event was supported by Kalloorkkad co-operative society and CDS.
Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in India. Early detection and treatment initiation can help save many lives. JWALA has been conducting various awareness programmes for breast cancer prevention and early detection. AFPI Kerala has joined hands with them in this endeavour.
400 people attended the seminar. It was an interactive session where the queries and concerns of women regarding breast cancer were discussed.
In the near future, there are plans to conduct breast cancer screening camps as a joint venture.

AFPl സംസ്ഥാന പ്രസിഡന്റ് ഡോ.രശ്മി എസ് കൈമൾ , സെക്രട്ടറി ഡോ. സെറിന് കുരിയാക്കോസ് എന്നിവര് ചേര്ന്ന് സെമിനാർ നയിക്കുകയും സംശയനിവാരണം നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. കല്ലൂര്ക്കാട് മെഡിക്കല് ഓഫീസര് ഡോ. അമര്ലാല് സെമിനാര് ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്തു സംസാരിച്ചു. ജ്വാല പ്രതിനിധി ശ്രീമതി ബോബി ഉത്ഘാടന യോഗത്തില് ആശംസകള് അര്പ്പിച്ചു സംസാരിച്ചു. ബോധവത്കരണ സെമിനാറിനും ഐക്യദാർഡ്യമറിയിച്ചു കല്ലൂര്ക്കാട് പഞ്ചായത്ത് ജനപ്രതിനിധികള്, സഹകരണബാങ്ക് പ്രതിനിധികള് തുടങ്ങിയവര് സംസാരിച്ചു.
